Don’t call people things they don’t call themselves or “out” people who wish to keep their political affiliations to themselves.

Avoid clichés that are party specific. Party registration and political beliefs do not necessarily align, and we tend to either underestimate or overestimate the impact of political affiliation on others’ beliefs depending on how we perceive their social identities.

Don’t take for granted that someone would “never say that” or “never interpret it like that.” The very concept of common sense is culturally specific and contextual.

Eliminate words like “right” and “wrong” from your vocabulary, and be open to discussing root issues. Psychologists have shown that people are less distressed by opposing political views than the fact that they disagree with someone they are close to.
